STYLE GUIDE
Possibly the most daunting part of having your family photos taken is choosing your wardrobe! I have put together some suggestions to help you with the planning process! With the help of this style guide, we can find the perfect outfits for your family!
FIND A COLOR PALETTE
Choosing a color palette for your outfits can be challenging. Some of you will know certain colors you want to use immediately, and will start shopping based off of those colors. Some of you will find an outfit you love, and decide to base the color palette off of that outfit. It is completely up to you. When you decide what direction you want to go in, pick a few colors to play with!
VARIETY
Try to have your family members wearing different styles of pants. Mix up colors and materials. Try having one person in jeans, someone in khakis, someone in colored pants, someone in a skirt or dress, etc. It makes each person look unique!
PATTERNS
Patterns are a great way to bring your personality in to your photos. Instead of opting for plain, solid-colored t-shirts, choose patterns instead! Mix it up with animal prints, stripes, floral, plaid, etc. Not everyone should wear patterns, but it adds interest to throw in a few patterned items!
LAYERS
Layering is one of the best ways to step up your wardrobe game! If the weather is chilly, you can add button-up shirts under sweaters, scarves, and even cute jackets! If it is warm, try lace or light weight cardigans, or vests.
COORDINATE - NOT MATCH!
The days of matching white t-shirts and blue jeans have come and gone! Each member of your family has their own personality, let that shine through with unique clothing! Find ways to combine different colors, patterns, textures, and styles. Start with an outfit that you love and base the rest of your families’ wardrobe off of that. Tie in colors of the other outfits with accessories like shoes, hair bows, patterns on clothing, etc.
BOLD COLORS
Don’t be afraid of bold colors. Bold colors will really make your image POP! When playing with bold colors, make sure to avoid neon colors at all costs. If your clothing is too vivid or neon it will cast colors onto your skin that are not flattering!
TEXTURES
Mix and match textures to add some interest to your photos! Some great ways to add texture would be with lace, knit, ruffles, tweed, tulle, etc.
ACCESSORIES & SHOES
One important piece of your wardrobe that is often overlooked is your shoes and accessories! I suggest over-accessorizing with jewelry, cute hats (NOT baseball caps!), suspenders, ties, headbands, floral head wreaths, and stylish shoes. Extra accessories look amazing in photos!
A FEW FINAL NOTES!
Wear something you feel good in. If you feel beautiful, it WILL show in your photos. The opposite is also true! Don’t show up in clothing that you feel self-conscious in!
Dress for the weather. Please please PLEASE do not show up to a winter or cool fall session with your children in short sleeves and light clothing! They will not enjoy the experience, and neither will you!
Pinterest is your friend. If you are struggling on where to start, go to Pinterest and search “Fall Family Photos”, or “Spring Family Photos”. There is a wealth of information out there that can help you!
I am your friend. Don’t hesitate to ask me for my advice in this department. I am NOT fashion savvy, HOWEVER, I do know what photographs well and what doesn’t. I’m happy to answer any questions you have!
